In the beginning...

• recent times:

  • 1997: three operating systems, NEXSTEP, Linux, Irix, all integrated, main server is an O2
  • 199x: Linux popularity increases, NeXT and Irix slowly decline, “soft” transition
  • today: 40+ workstations running RedHat Linux
    • some NeXT's are still alive (black hardware and PCs)
    • some SGI's are still alive (hardly ever used any more)
    • Macintoshes have always been there (OS9 for now)
